Ohio State is coming into Madison this weekend and these two games will have major postseason implications. Wisconsin needs a win OR a Penn State loss to secure the second seed in the Big Ten tournament. As for the national implications, OSU is ranked 15th according to uscho.com, while the Badgers are only one spot behind at 16th. Because there are two additional conference title bids to be had, it’s difficult to see both of these teams making the 16-team tournament. However, there are multiple scenarios as to how things can play out:
Scenario 1: Badgers sweep. This is obviously the ideal situation for Wisconsin. Winning both games against Ohio State would surely catapult them ahead of the Buckeyes in the standings. Regardless of what happens in the Big Ten Tournament, this should secure a spot in the tournament.
Scenario 2: Both teams win one game. It’s unlikely for a series split to cause a change in the standings. If this happens, both teams will be fighting for their national tournament lives in the Big Ten tournament as OSU and UW both getting at-large bids at this point is highly implausible.
Scenario 3: Buckeyes sweep. This is the nightmare scenario for Wisconsin. Lose two games at home and it will most likely result in the Badgers being on the outside looking in while requiring a conference tournament championship to land a tournament spot.
Wisconsin faces Ohio State in a series this weekend at the Kohl Center. Both games begin at 7 p.m. CT. Friday’s game can be seen on the Wisconsin Channel, and Saturday’s match can be seen on BTN. Both games are on the radio at WIBA-AM 1310.
