Gopín’s Treinta: MLB Power Rankings Week 10

Josh Donaldson and the Blue Jays are on fire and only a game out of first place.
Josh Donaldson and the Blue Jays are on fire and only a game out of first place.

After another week of baseball here is a new Treinta.

1. St. Louis Cardinals (41-21, Last Week-1): What their pitching has done without Wainwright is incredible. They have only allowed 2.89 runs per game.

2. Los Angeles Dodgers (37-26, Last Week-5): Kenley Jansen has been one of the best closers in baseball since he returned from his injury. He has almost two strikeouts an inning and a WHIP of 0.36.

3. Pittsburgh Pirates (35-27, Last Week-4): A.J. Burnett has been fantastic with an ERA under two and a WHIP of 1.13. Can he really retire if he keeps his great pitching up?

4. Kansas City Royals (34-25, Last Week-6): The starting pitching has been disappointing, especially Danny Duffy and Yordano Ventura, both with ERAs above 4.50.

5. Houston Astros (36-28, Last Week-2): Seven-game losing streak where they scored more than two runs once was snapped when they scored eight in 1/3 inning against King Felix. Baseball.

6. New York Yankees (34-28, Last Week-7): The offense was a question mark coming into the season, but it has been one of the best in baseball, scoring on average the second most in baseball per game.

7. San Francisco Giants (34-30, Last Week-8): Pretty cool that Chris Heston pitched a no-hitter because just two years ago he had an ERA approaching six in AAA.

8. Tampa Bay Rays (35-29, Last Week-12): Chris Archer will be in consideration for the A.L. Cy Young if he continues to pitch the way he has. ERA of 2.00 and 113 strikeouts in 90 innings is just plain dominant.

9. Toronto Blue Jays (34-30, Last Week-16): Eleven in a row is impressive, but they have had runs similar to this the last two seasons that were followed by a bad rest of the season.

10. Chicago Cubs (34-27, Last Week-13): Starlin Castro came up big this weekend against the Reds with walkoff hits on both Saturday and Sunday. Oh, and the bleachers in right field are finally done.

11. Texas Rangers (33-30, Last Week-11): Chi Chi Gonzalez has been superb in his first three starts with an ERA of 0.42; but, if he wants this to continue, he cannot walk more batters than he strikes out.

12. Minnesota Twins (34-28, Last Week-3): They have cooled off lately (4-9 in June), but calling up Byron Buxton can hopefully get the Twins back on track.

13. Washington Nationals (33-30, Last Week-9): We saw a glimpse of what they can do when they got hot in May, but can they play that way on a consistent basis and stay healthy? So far the answer is no and they are allowing the Mets to stay in it.

14. New York Mets (34-30, Last Week-10): Their offense ranks towards the bottom and if they can get a good hitter, they would not be a good team to match up against in October.

15. Detroit Tigers (33-30, Last Week-14): Sent down Shane Greene who has struggled a lot since he was the cover photo for the Treinta in Week 2.

16. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (32-31, Last Week-18): The main positive for their rotation is that they have all stayed healthy, but the problem is they give up too many home runs. Weaver and Shoemaker have given up 14 and 13 respectively.

17. Baltimore Orioles (31-31, Last Week-22): Six-game winning streak was much needed as now they are only three games back. If they can get more consistent starting pitching, they have just as good of a shot as any of the teams, except Boston, in winning the division.

18. San Diego Padres (32-33, Last Week-15): Brandon Maurer looks like he has found his niche in the bullpen with an ERA of 1.69 and a WHIP of 0.78, which is much better than statistics as a starter.

19. Cleveland Indians (29-33, Last Week-17): Corey Kluber has been unlucky in getting run support because he has a very similar ERA to Salazar and Bauer and has a much worse record.

20. Atlanta Braves (30-33, Last Week-20): They are lacking power as Freddie Freeman has double the amount of home runs than Kelly Johnson, who has six and the second most on their team.

21. Arizona Diamondbacks (30-32, Last Week-19): It is surprising that they are two games below .500 because they have three starters with ERAs around 5.25 and a pretty bad bullpen.

22. Chicago White Sox (28-33, Last Week-24): Too much inconsistency on the South Side. After sweeping the Astros, they get swept by the Rays. That cannot happen if they want make a run back into the playoff race.

23. Seattle Mariners (28-35, Last Week-23): Robinson Cano’s power has disappeared as he has only two home runs this season. He has fewer home runs than Adam Eaton and Marwin Gonzalez.

24. Colorado Rockies (28-34, Last Week-25): Getting back Corey Dickerson from injury will give an already deep lineup another good bat.

25. Cincinnati Reds (28-34, Last Week-28): It is time to sell because they have lost several players to injury and the other teams in the division ahead of them are significantly better.

26. Boston Red Sox (27-37, Last Week-21): This season is going downhill quickly. Six-game losing streak and an argument in the dugout between pitcher Wade Miley and manager John Farrell. Not what Boston had in mind coming into 2015.

27. Miami Marlins (27-37, Last Week-26): The season is lost, so I do not see the point of bringing back Jose Fernandez right now. If I were them I would wait for him to get as much rest as possible and start his rehab in July.

28. Oakland A’s (26-39, Last Week-27): A record of 4-18 in one-run games is why they are below .500 and only some positive regression can save their season now. It has to happen fast because Billy Beane will be trading come July 31st.

29. Milwaukee Brewers (24-40, Last Week-29): Since starting 5-18, they have gone 19-22, which is a winning percentage of .463, right around, maybe a bit below, of what they were projected to be this year. The bad start completely killed any chance they had this year.

30. Philadelphia Phillies (22-42, Last Week-30): This is just the beginning of the run of being the worst team the rest of the decade. Better hope they get value out of their trade assets, but can anyone trust Ruben Amaro Jr. to make the right decisions.
