Tonight at the NBA Draft, Frank Kaminsky was drafted #9 overall by the Charlotte Hornets, and Sam Dekker was drafted #18 by the Houston Rockets. Kaminsky was the highest drafted Badger since Devin Harris went 5th overall in 2004.
“Frank The Tank” always dreamt to play in front of Michael Jordan, idolizing him growing up in Illinois. And now, his dream will come true as Jordan owns the Hornets. Kaminsky could start immediately for a Charlotte team lacking scoring and shooting, and I think he will. They have been the most active team in the short offseason so far, notably trading for Nicolas Batum. He will play next to big Al Jefferson (if he doesn’t get traded), who I think will be an underrated mentor for young Frank. In addition, Kaminsky will play alongside another former NCAA basketball sensation: Kemba Walker.
Dekker will go to a title contender and MVP runner-up James Harden’s Rockets where he could also start right away. The Rockets have Trevor Ariza and Josh Smith, but Smith will likely be gone and Ariza will not be a huge barrier to Dekker’s development and success. Dekker will also get to play with Dwight Howard, who I am sure he is excited to play with. It’s important to note that Dekker will get an excellent coach in Kevin McHale, who excelled at the forward position for the Boston Celtics for a long time.
Overall, both players ended up in great places in terms of playing and making an impact right away. This officially ends an unforgettable season for the Badgers. We couldn’t be prouder of you Frank and Sam! Best of luck to the both of you. On Wisconsin and Dirty Dub forever.
