Big Ten Awards: Hayes, Happ honored

The Big Ten announced its conference awards early this evening, and Wisconsin walked away with some hardware.

Nigel Hayes, who was earlier today named First Team All-Big Ten by the Associated Press, was also named First Team All-Big Ten by the coaches and media. Hayes has averaged 16.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game through 31 games. The junior forward is the 13th Wisconsin first-team All-Big Ten player in the last 15 years.

Ethan Happ, who has averaged 12.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as a freshman, won the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Year award. Happ leads the Big Ten in steals, is tied for the league lead in double-doubles, and ranks top 10 in several advanced defensive categories. Happ beat out Milwaukee native and Maryland center Diamond Stone, who averaged 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game this season. Happ was also named to the All-Freshman Team, All-Defensive Team, and Third Team All-Big Ten by the coaches.

Indiana’s Tom Crean won Coach of the Year over Wisconsin’s Greg Gard. Gard, who is expected to be named Wisconsin’s full-time head coach tomorrow, has led Wisconsin’s turnaround this season with a 13-5 record, including an 11-2 record in the team’s last 13 games.

Bronson Koenig was also named to the Third Team All-Big Ten by the media. Vitto Brown was the Badgers’ sportsmanship representative.
