Zach Johnson may have won The Open in a four-hole playoff with Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman, but the amateurs stole the show in this year’s British Open. The winner of the silver medal, the amateur who had the lowest score, ended up being Wisconsin’s own Jordan Niebrugge.
“It was awesome out there,” Niebrugge told me today. Is there any other way for a 21-year old amateur to describe his past five days?
After making history in the opening round for an amateur at The Open on Thursday, Niebrugge finished his second major in the top 10, with the likes of many of the world’s best players. He finished 11-under par, shooting a 70 (-2) today, and was in the hunt until the end. His top-10 finish was the first by an amateur in an Open at St. Andrews since 1960. Furthermore, he scored the lowest 72 hole score in The Open’s history at St. Andrew’s!
Before the tournament started, Niebrugge told me his main goal coming in was to win the medal of low amateur (silver medal). He did just that, finishing as the amateur with the best score after Paul Dunne unfortunately fell apart in the final round. Not only did Niebrugge have the lowest score of all amateurs, but he also had the same score as Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia and finished in the top 10.
Way to represent Wisconsin, Jordan! Maybe he should always do interviews with us before his majors in the future.
