With dual-threat quarterback Austin Kafentzis already transferring to Nevada and running back Jordan Stevenson struggling with enrollment (although he should be good to go), the Wisconsin Badgers class of 2015 has started off in a negative light. Nevertheless, the Badgers are expecting this class to continue the tradition of consistency in Madison under new coach Paul Chryst. Here’s a look at the 2015 recruits that could make an impact right away, or at least in the next few seasons.
Arrington Farrar, Safety (College Park, GA)
The 6’2″, 200 pound safety de-committed from Stanford earlier this year before choosing Wisconsin over other big-name programs such as Notre Dame. Farrar, the 23rd ranked safety according to ESPN and a member of the ESPN 300, is noted as a speedy player for his position with great size for a collegiate defensive back. With an overall veteran secondary in Madison this season, Farrar will likely redshirt.
Bradrick Shaw, Running Back (Birmingham, AL)
Shaw, the #29 ranked running back on ESPN, chose Wisconsin over the SEC’s Alabama, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt along with the Big Ten’s Minnesota and Nebraska. At 6’1″, 200 pounds, Shaw has a downhill running style, which makes sense with his 4.7 40 time. I would expect him to eventually be in the running back conversation with Jordan Stevenson, but I think he will redshirt this season.
Jordan Stevenson, Running Back (Dallas, TX)
Stevenson is a smaller running back at 5’9″, 185 pounds, but his 4.4 40-time is astounding for a half-back his age. He projects to be in the mix at running back when Clement leaves, and additional strength will only improves Stevenson’s bright future as a Badger. I’m not sure if Stevenson will redshirt, but if I had to guess, he will get some freshman carries right away in garbage time like Clement did his freshman year.
Kyle Penniston, Tight End (Santa Ana, CA)
Penniston had offers from Florida State and Miami (FL), but chose Wisconsin’s recent history of tight end success. He’s 6’4″ and 235 pounds, and will undoubtedly put on more muscle. The tight end is already a sound blocker for a recent high school graduate and projects as a good route runner. His projection to impact the Badgers right away will depend on what they see out of their receivers and tight ends coming out of camp, although I would expect him to redshirt this season.
Alex Hornibrook, Quarterback (Malvern, PA)
Hornibrook will very likely redshirt this season, but he is the Badgers’ fourth quarterback on the depth chart, and reportedly “was one of the surprises of spring practice, showing poise and polish beyond what most would expect from a freshman enrolled a semester early,” according to FOX Sports’ Jesse Temple. The 6’4″, 210 pound left-handed quarterback has a solid release and fits the role of a pocket passer for the Badgers.
Ty DeForest, Linebacker (Marshall, WI)
DeForest will be a priority walk-on for the Badgers this season. With a 4.60 40, DeForest shows pretty good speed for a linebacker, along with great instincts on the field. He has impressed in spring practice as well, and the Badgers hope to turn him into a scholarship player by the time he graduates. Check out his videos here on his Hudl profile.
