The Entourage Movie: When Athletes Can Act by Sam Cherny

entourage-jpgDuring the spring semester (2014) of my junior year of college, I decided to begin watching a highly-regarded HBO series called Entourage. Even though this binge occurred, in part, during final examination preparations, I have to say that it was one of the best ideas of my life. Sorry Mom & Dad. I’m not going to sit here and give you a synopsis of the series because it’s not going to do you any justice. Just go beg your friend with HBOGo for his/her password and thank me later.

Fast forward a year and a few months, and now the Entourage movie is in theaters! The Entourage film is a continuation of internationally-known movie star Vincent Chase’s acting career. I really don’t know anything else about the film because I tend to close my eyes, put my hands over my ears, and run away from the TV screaming gibberish so I can keep movies a surprise. However, I do know that there are tons of athletes, models, and business moguls that make cameo appearances in the movie due to the fact that I follow some of them, as well as some producers and main actors, on Instagram.

This article is being published on Thursday June 4th, but I am beginning this piece on Tuesday because, let’s be honest, I’m not the only one in the bro-world that is being distracted during his work week by the premiere of this movie. After spending the past two weeks re-binge-watching this series, I am beyond excited to see what situations Vinnie and the boys get themselves into.

As of Tuesday, here are the cameos I am most looking forward to:

  • Rob Gronkowski. Yeah, yeah, yeah…I know it’s cliche. But, who wouldn’t be excited about an NFL player to be in a movie that twerks on stages, tells the world to “deflate deez nuts,” and owns his own party bus? I’m going to venture down the safe path and assume his cameo will be in a club/party crushing Heinekens with the boys while stiff-arming Ari.
  • Emily Ratajkowksi. Ever since her appearance in Gone Girl, I feel as if the whole world has been anxiously awaiting to see her return to the silver screen and once again show us all of the talent that she possesses. Eric Murphy has already been involved with one member of the Maxim Hot 100 before – Emmanuelle Chriqui – will he be able to pull it off again with another member of this elite group?
  • Mark Cuban. Cuban is a very entertaining person to follow on social media. If you have the time to sift through his tweets about America’s college education bubble and the launch of his Cyber Dust app, then you will find that he’s absolutely hilarious. He’s also bound to be one of the most powerful people working in this film, behind Warren Buffett of course.
  • Bob Saget. The “Full House” star was in a classic episode of Entourage in Season 2 which involves Vince being welcomed to a new Los Angeles neighborhood while Turtle and Drama enjoy some expensive “party favors” from a mutual friend. Saget appears in a few more episodes in seasons six and seven and does not disappoint in those either. His old-man, crude humor is going to be classic.

Ok, so, it’s Thursday. I saw the movie last night and it did not disappoint. I would like to thank Fandango.com and the AMC Loews 7 Orpheum Theater on New York City’s Upper East Side for allowing me to comfortably attend this much-anticipated movie.

-Gronkowski lived up to my expectations and I more or less predicted his role to a tee…which wasn’t difficult.

-Ratajkowski obviously played a role that involved her hooking up with one of the cast members (Hmm…I wonder who?) and twisting the plot a bit. The only characters I’ve ever hated more than Haley Joel Osment are Dom and Ashley.

-Cuban and Saget didn’t do or say much. However, Saget’s one scene where he asks Vince for a favor at his movie screening was priceless.

Here is a list of my favorite cameo appearances:

  • Clifford Joseph “T.I.” Harris. E went to the OBGYN with Sloan, so the atmosphere was rather tense. But, when T.I. strolled into the lobby of the gyno’s office and told his wife, Tiny, from “T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle” to stop getting pregnant, the theater erupted in laughter. Not surprised at all by T.I.’s talents seeing that he is already capable of defying gravity.
  • Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi. This appearance came from so far out of left field. I am willing to bet that most people in the theater last night didn’t even know it was Kid Cudi. Since Man on the Moon was probably the most-played CD in my car from high school, I immediately recognized him. But his ability to act as a stressed-out, overly-anxious, and shy assistant to Ari blew me away. Definitely a better performance than his song “Girls.”
  • Kelsey Grammer. All of the scenes during the Entourage TV series where Ari has meltdowns at his couple’s therapy sessions are gut-wrenchingly funny. Upon Ari’s arrival to a session in the movie, him and Grammer have a hilarious exchange about the status of their marriages. During this therapy session, Ari picks up his phone and punches a picture of a kitten hanging on the wall. Arguably the funniest scene in the movie.
  • Clay Matthews & Liam Neeson. After arm wrestling Turtle and flipping off Ari Gold in a Bentley respectively, these two further concreted the fact that they are true heroes of mine.
  • Other small appearances that were short but great include: Thierry Henry, Matt Lauer, Warren Buffett, and Baron Davis.

Do yourself a favor and see the movie this weekend.

Make sure to stick around after the credits, too.

I also heard that Russell Wilson made zero friends while filming this movie. I hate him. So much. You too, Pete Carroll.
