Wisconsin arrives at homecoming buoyed by a dramatic 17-point comeback at No. 13 Penn State, but its matchup with Michigan State is expected to be tight. Advanced models and bookmakers both see the Badgers as favorites, yet not overwhelmingly so.
The Badgers are 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play. FanDuel Sportsbook lists Wisconsin as a 9.5-point favorite over the Spartans, a margin that suggests a clear edge but not a rout.
Analytical forecasts line up with the betting market. Dropback HQ contributor Parker Fleming’s model gives Wisconsin a 74.5 percent chance to win, projecting a final score near 27.0 for the Badgers and 16.3 for Michigan State — a differential nearly identical to the Vegas spread.

Defensive success rate
Where the contrast is most stark is on defense. Wisconsin’s unit posts a defensive success rate of about 36.0%, a mark that ranks among the nation’s best. Its run defense is particularly stout, with a success rate versus the rush near 33.3%, which sits in the top ten nationally.

Michigan State, by comparison, shows a higher overall defensive success rate — roughly 46.1% — placing it well below Wisconsin’s level. The Spartans also struggle more against the run, with a rush success rate around 48.0%, a figure that ranks near the bottom third of FBS teams.
Offensive success rate
On offense the numbers tilt slightly toward Michigan State. The Spartans record an offensive success rate near 48.9% (around 36th nationally), while Wisconsin sits close to 45.2% (near 74th).
That edge, however, comes with important context. Wisconsin has faced tougher defensive opponents to date, including Notre Dame and Penn State. Meanwhile, a sizeable portion of Michigan State’s offensive effectiveness has come on the ground — a dimension now weakened by the season-ending loss of top tailback Cam Edwards.
Put together, the matchup favors Wisconsin schematically. The Badgers’ offense, which has been uneven, will face a defense that has allowed production; and Wisconsin’s strong run defense is well-suited to contain Michigan State’s most reliable offensive avenue. These factors help explain why both analytics and oddsmakers expect a Wisconsin win without predicting a blowout.
