Coming into the 2016 season right-hander Wily Peralta was the Opening Day starter for the Brewers. As of Sunday though, Peralta has been sent down to the minors, optioned to the Brewers Triple-A affiliate the Colorado Sky Sox.
The move comes as veteran starting pitcher Matt Garza is returning to the team after a long stint on the DL and his rehab assignment with the Single-A Timber Rattlers where he went 0-2 with a 4.76 ERA and 10 strikeouts.
So far this season, Peralta has struggled to find his old self, currently holding a 4-7 record. Holding the worst ERA among the Brewers starting staff (and all qualifying starting pitchers) at 6.68, he has also struggled to get strikeouts, which was his bread and butter in his breakout 2014 season.
In 2014, Peralta went 17-11, leading the team in wins, and held a 3.53 ERA while striking out 154 over almost 200 innings pitched. Manager Craig Counsell was most likely hoping for another 2014 coming from his Opening Day starter, but ended up getting his worst pitching from the starting staff.
This move also comes as Peralta got a win over the New York Mets on Saturday, in which he only gave up three runs and even hit his first career home run.
The Brewers take on the New York Mets Sunday, with Zach Davies taking the mound for the series finale.
