Myles Turner thriving in unexpected leadership role with Bucks

Myles Turner arrived in Milwaukee expecting to chase championships alongside an established superstar. A year after the franchise remade itself, he has instead embraced a different task: serving as a steady veteran voice for a much younger roster.

Turner stepping up as a mentor

At media day Turner made clear he views his role beyond statistics. He described being one of the longest-tenured players on the roster and said younger teammates watch how he conducts himself. That, he added, matters as much as on-court production.

Offseason actions underscored the point. Turner organized a pre-camp trip to Texas to help newcomers bond — from boating outings to lighter moments such as armadillo races. He didn’t have to lead those events. He chose to, believing it would help the group gel.

A calming influence after a roster overhaul

Milwaukee’s lineup looks very different following the trade of Giannis Antetokounmpo. With multiple new faces, the Bucks have fewer veterans to steady the locker room. Turner is one of only three players on the team older than 30, giving him a clear role in keeping the clubhouse even-keeled.

Offseason trip and team activities helped younger Bucks build chemistry.

His experience — through playoff runs and rough patches alike — positions him to be the voice that can calm players during stretches of adversity. That kind of veteran leadership can be as valuable as a late-game defensive stop.

What Turner means for Kel'el Ware and the center spot

Rookie center Kel’el Ware is expected to have a prominent role, but Turner remains the primary option at the five. That setup gives Ware a chance to learn in-game habits and routines without being thrown into a full starter’s load immediately.

Learning behind a veteran could accelerate Ware’s development. If Turner were moved at some point, Ware would be likelier to step into an expanded role prepared, rather than being exposed to steep early challenges.

Unless the Bucks execute a late roster shakeup — such as completing a deal for Jalen Duren on the eve of the preseason — Turner’s future in Milwaukee appears focused on leadership and proving last season’s inconsistencies were an outlier.
