Training camp reports suggest Kevin Porter Jr. could lead the Bucks’ second unit

Photos from Milwaukee’s training-camp sessions appear to reveal a likely opening lineup: Ryan Rollins, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kyle Kuzma and Myles Turner. If that grouping is indeed the starting five, it would push Kevin Porter Jr. into a clear role leading the second unit — a situation that could boost both his usage and his trade value.

Why the bench role could suit Porter

Playing behind a staggered starting group that features multiple off-ball scorers gives Porter a chance to run the offense when he checks in. Rather than competing for touches with players who draw most of the initial looks, he would enter as the primary playmaker for the reserves.

Porter projected to run the bench offense as primary playmaker.

That matters because Porter’s strengths include both scoring and playmaking. In the second unit he can hunt favorable matchups, attack closeouts and create for teammates who are used to moving without the ball. In short, the role offers a higher volume of ball-handling and clearer decision-making responsibility than he might get alongside the projected starters.

Kevin Porter Jr. also appears to have made a personal investment in this season by accepting his player option. In that context, a strong showing as the bench floor general could lead to the most productive statistical campaign of his career — and attract significant contract interest next summer, from Milwaukee or elsewhere.

Who he’ll play with — and who could challenge him

The reserve group expected to complement Porter includes AJ Green, Ousmane Dieng, Kel’el Ware and Gary Trent Jr. None are projected to serve as full-time ball-handlers, which should allow Porter to operate with freedom and shape the second-unit offense.

Depth chart competition among Bucks reserves could affect Porter’s minutes.

There is, however, an internal uncertainty: the development of the team’s younger guards, Brayden Burries and Kasparas Jakucionis. Both possess upside and could earn increased minutes if the coaching staff accelerates their rotation time. That scenario would naturally reduce some of Porter’s touches and on-court latitude.

The timeline is the key variable. With more experienced players ahead of the youngsters on the depth chart, immediate displacement of Porter seems unlikely. But if the staff chooses to bring the young guards along quickly, Porter’s role would need to adjust accordingly.

Immediate outlook

For now, the available evidence points to Porter leading the bench unit and controlling many of its possessions. That configuration gives him an opportunity to showcase creation and scoring on a regular basis — a chance to prove his value heading into next summer’s free-agent picture.
