Bucks guard Tyler Herro could solidify first-option role by addressing one weakness

Show summary Hide summary

Tyler Herro arrives in Milwaukee expected to carry a larger offensive load than he did in Miami, and his ability to score between the arc and the paint could determine how well he adapts. Tightening his mid-range game would give the Bucks a different look and force opponents to defend him in more places.

Herro’s mid-range could elevate his game

Throughout his career, perimeter shooting has been Herro’s primary weapon. In Miami he benefited from playmakers and interior threats who drew attention inside, often leaving him with open looks from the outside.

Practicing mid-range shots can add a new scoring dimension for Herro.

Now he joins a roster where he will need to produce as a primary option. Developing a reliable mid-range shot would add another dimension to his scoring and make him less predictable.

His mid-range numbers have fluctuated: 37.5%, 43.6%, 39.2%, 36.7%, 39.2%, 42.9% and 39.4%. Notably, his lone All‑Star season coincided with the highest mark in that sequence. If he can sustain that level on greater volume, defenses will have more to worry about.

A polished mid-range also signals versatility. Players such as Kevin Durant and DeMar DeRozan still produce high scoring outputs late in their careers because they can score in multiple areas, not just from beyond the arc or at the rim.

Milwaukee’s game plan starts with Herro

There is precedent for how mid-range effectiveness can boost overall production. In the season when Herro was at his most efficient from that area he averaged 23.9 points and converted 56.5% of his two-point attempts, both career highs. Those figures suggest the shot can be a meaningful contributor when it’s working.

Last season, by contrast, was one of his least efficient from mid-range. A return to better form would help the Bucks, who will now be preparing schemes with Herro as a focal point.

Expect opposing teams to design defenses around him. That will create opportunities for teammates, so growth as a playmaker will matter. Still, Herro is primarily a scorer, and Milwaukee will rely on him to produce points. Beyond maintaining his health, sharpening his mid-range should be a clear objective as he steps into a leading role for the Milwaukee Bucks.
