The offseason is now officially underway in Titletown.
According to multiple reports, the Packers and defensive tackle Letroy Guion have agreed on a three-year, $11.75 million contract.
Guion, who played his second season with Green Bay this past year, was scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on March 9th.
Despite being arrested for marijuana and firearms possession last February, Ted Thompson retained the defensive lineman on a one-year, $2.75 million deal due to a very productive 2014 season. Guion served a three-game suspension for the charges and did not have the same productivity on the field as he hoped in the 2015 campaign.
The drop in effectiveness stems from B.J. Raji’s return to nose tackle, forcing Guion to move over to the end position where he recorded just 21 combined tackles and zero sacks in his 13 games played.
The question that now surfaces with this deal: what happens to Raji?
The 29-year old veteran, who also signed a one year deal last offseason worth roughly $3.5 million, will become a free agent in March. Raji is reaching the point in his career where we’ve seen Ted Thompson let several of his players walk rather than re-sign them. Both Greg Jennings and James Jones were age 29 when Thompson decided not to renew their contracts.
Guion joins fellow defensive lineman Mike Daniels to earn new deals in recent months. With a young defensive line core in tact, the interest now lies in what Thompson does with Raji, as well as pending free agents Mike Neal and Nick Perry.
