We are proud to announce our initial speaker series for the 2016 Spring semester at UW-Madison!

Four of our five already scheduled speakers are UW-Madison students or alumni. They all bring passion and experience from the sports business and journalism industry. All speaker events are open to the public, and we encourage anybody to come down and attend. We are in talks with multiple other speakers (some of which are big names), so stay tuned on announcements on those.

Below you will find the dates, bios, and room locations for the five speakers already scheduled.


Tuesday, February 23, 7:00 PM: Stephen Watson (WISN/ABC Milwaukee)

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2011 with degrees in Journalism and Communications Arts, Stephen Watson jumped right into a commercial television play-by-play broadcasting job in Bismarck, ND with BEK Sports Network. From there, he transitioned to news as a Weekend Sports Anchor at WPTZ-TV in Burlington, VT. After two years at WPTZ-TV, he stayed within the Hearst TV family and accepted a job as a Sports Reporter at WISN-TV in Milwaukee, WI.

He currently covers the Packers, Brewers, Bucks, Wisconsin Badgers and Marquette in addition to weekly feature reporting.

Stephen also worked/interned for the Badger Herald, ESPN Madison, WSUM, and the UW-Madison Athletic Department during his years in Madison.

Lisa Fielding is a news anchor and reporter for Newsradio 780. She brings nearly three decades of news and sports, radio and television broadcasting experience to WBBM. A graduate of Bradley University and an award-winning journalist, Lisa began her career as an intern and reporter for WEEK-TV in Peoria, then moved on to work for WROK-WZOK radio and as weekend anchor for WIFR-TV in Rockford. At the same time, she did some fill-in work as one of the first female voices on Chicago’s new all-sports station “The Score”.

In 1999, she moved to Madison to be the main anchor for Fox 47 News at Nine where she was able to travel to the Rose Bowl and to the Final Four with the Wisconsin Badgers. Before coming to WBBM, she most recently served as main anchor of WVTV-WB 18 News at Nine in Milwaukee. She also spent seven years in minor league baseball as one of the few female public address announcers in the country and even was a contender to succeed Wayne Messmer as the public address announcer for the Chicago Cubs.

In addition to her duties as anchor and reporter at WBBM, she is an instructor for the Chicago Broadcast class at the prestigious Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.

Tessa Ruid graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and International Business. While attending UW, Tessa decided to combine her passion for business and love of sports into a career. First, she covered over 200 Badgers games and events while working as an Athletic Communications Student Assistant for three years. Additionally in 2013, she interned at the National Basketball Association’s League Office in New York City in their Corporate Services and Promotions Department. She also had the opportunity to work as FOX Sports Wisconsin’s Marketing and Communications Intern in the summer of 2014. After graduating in May, Tessa accepted a full-time internship role with the Green Bay Packers where she works as the team’s Brand and Marketing Intern.

David Cohn is the director of member services and communications for the Wisconsin State Golf Association. In that role, he is the main customer service contact for the WSGA membership of 360 clubs and 40,000 individual members and manages the association’s communications efforts, including content on WSGA.org and the WSGA’s social media channels. In addition, he assists with the production and distribution of Wisconsin Golfer, the official publication of the WSGA, and coordinates activation for the WSGA’s 11 corporate partners.

He previously served as the WSGA’s assistant director of rules and competitions. His other professional experience includes two years with the University of Wisconsin athletic department and the Wisconsin PGA Section.

David is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he helped started the Sports Business Club and worked in the Athletic Department, and holds a Master of Sports Administration degree from Ohio University. He currently resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Curt is a junior at UW-Madison studying journalism with a strong focus on sports reporting. Currently, he is a Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball beat reporter at Bucky’s 5th Quarter of SB Nation. This summer, he will be in working in Milwaukee as an Associate Reporter for MLB.com covering the Brewers as they (maybe don’t) chase the pennant. He also covers prep sports for The Star in Sun Prairie.
