It seems like there is always a story following the young Giants wide receiver since he was drafted 12th overall in 2014, and the trend continued Monday, when Odell Beckham Jr. had NFL fans swirling without even lifting a finger.
As all of the owners and general managers are meeting in Orlando for their annual meeting, Giants co-owner John Mara was put on the spot about his best player. Mara was asked whether it was possible to imagine Beckham in another team’s jersey before next season and Mara’s answer has many fans left confused.
“I can’t answer that one way or the other. We’re certainly not shopping him. Again, when you’re coming off a season when you’re 3-13 and played as poorly as we played, I wouldn’t say that anyone is untouchable.”
So, the Giants are not actively shopping him but no one is untouchable. You can expect a few trade proposals to be put in this week at the owner and general manager meetings. Still, all signs point in the direction that OBJ will not be traded, which was reinforced Monday night by reporters.
This isn’t the first time Beckham has found himself in the spotlight this offseason. Earlier in March, a video surfaced of the wide receiver with what appeared to be cocaine and a brown cigarette in hand. When asked about the video, Mara said he is “tired of answering questions about Odell’s behavior and what the latest incident is. I think he knows what we expect of him, and now it’s up to him.”
Beckham has gotten into issues on the field in the past too. Remember his famous quarrel with Josh Norman? Or his highly televised love affair with the kicking net? Odell is good at drawing attention to himself, which is not always good when trying to get a new contract.
That is his ultimate goal. Last offseason, he said he wanted to become the “highest paid player in the NFL.” Beckham Jr. is reportedly committed to holding out until he gets his new contract, and doesn’t anticipate stepping onto the field at all until a deal is done.
