After playing for the New York Knicks’ G League affiliate Westchester Knicks, Wisconsin basketball great Nigel Hayes has signed a 10-day contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, per Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports.
Hayes also confirmed the news to me, via text message.
This is Hayes’ first solely NBA contract, and he will move from the east coast to the west coast to get his shot. The signing comes after Hayes was one of Westchester’s best players, averaging 15 points, nearly seven rebounds, and two assists per game, in 30 games with 27 starts.
Hayes was one of the most impactful players in Wisconsin basketball history, being a part of two final four teams and the leader of back to back Sweet Sixteen appearances, including a win over top-ranked Villanova in his senior season.
Hayes went undrafted in the 2017 NBA Draft, but the Lakers could be a great fit for the 6-8 forward. Los Angeles is a very young team that is far from the playoffs, and Hayes could get a real chance to show his game and hard work with the likes of Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram.
