The Wisconsin men’s basketball team defeated the SKYCITY Breakers 87-53 on August 17th in Tauranga, New Zealand. Andy Van Vliet was the standout with 14 points and 7 rebounds, while shooting 4-5 from three-point range.
The box score showed a steady distribution of the ball as D’mitrik Trice contributed with 12 points, Freshmen Kobe King and Nathan Reuvers both added 9 and last games leader Brevin Pritzl went for 8 points. Wisconsin went three-happy hitting 15 out of 27 field goals from behind the arc (55.6%).
Van Vliet will be counted on if the Badgers have any hope of returning to the Sweet 16 this upcoming season. Van Vliet was ruled ineligible for his freshman season, but in his time on the court last season Van Vliet has averaged 3.4 minutes, 37.5% from three-point range.
Despite his lack of experience in America, the Belgium native averaged 8.5 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game at the 2014 U-20 FIBA European Championship. His length and ability to hit from long range will be a huge asset for the Badgers if he can breakout this season.
The Badgers take the court next on August 19, where they will attempt to extend their undefeated, abroad winning streak against the Hawthorn Magic in Hawthorn, Australia.
