According to Wisconsin State Law, a job opening at the university must be posted for one week. Applications are due on March 3, and the anticipated begin date is March 8. Multiple candidates must be interviewed and the candidate must be approved by the UW Board of Regents.
Gard has led the Badgers to an 11-5 record, entering Wisconsin into the NCAA tournament mix. He has received endorsement after endorsement from the national and local media and even players. By naming Gard the head coach before the season ends, the Badgers can send a message of stability to recruits.
The Badgers also posted an assistant position, which all three assistants will apply for.
Who else could possibly be hired in that time period? The answer, probably nobody but Greg Gard.
